A letter from the freaky Society

Dear Social Animals,

I hope you are living a great life within the limitations put by me. I am sure that you have been to the God’s place repeatedly and found solace there. I have been doing good and the past week was an eventful one. A social-animal approached me because his daughter has proposed a boy’s name for marriage. From what I know about the boy and his relationship with the girl, they have been together since they were 18 and this is the first relationship for both of them. They had been taught some values and that is why they never crossed the limits during the relationship. Their every move is aimed towards taking the relationship to the next level i.e. marriage. Isn’t it special for 23 year old people? They have shared happiness, grief, excitement and every other emotion which exists in the world. They are on the top of each other’s priority lists. I love these guys because they followed even those rules which had long been forgotten by me but the girl’s parents had reminded her about those and she obliged. The guy has a stable life now and they were ready to take the relationship to the next level, but since the girl was in love with her parents, she wanted to get their approval.

I love playing the Devil and I did the same this time. I told her father that the boy is from a different clan and thus the society will not approve such marriage and this marriage will be cursed. It is immaterial that the boy will keep his girl happy, because he is from a different caste. Caste and clan scores way above everything else. The father agreed to my view and he blindly followed whatever I said. For me, the freaky society, these issues are vital and thus I try my best to roast such relationships to death. What if their souls are connected, they are not connected by my chord of clan.

Ever yours,

The Freaky Society

Believe it or not, this happens often in some parts of the world and it makes me feel helpless. People have created a fictional thing called society and they keep following it blindly. What matters for a father? His daughter’s happiness or this caste system? Terms like clan and caste are exploited to fulfill their personal interests. Even if they love adhering to the rules of the society, they do not do it completely. They sort out the things which are to their liking and present them as their rules. These societies have groups to support rubbish such as communal issues but there is no-one to take care of such couples and their emotions get slaughtered brutally. This is not something to be discussed, the world needs someone to act upon it. I have been going through such issue and I am being forced to leave someone who has been my life for the past 5 years. Whatever I achieved, I have done in order to convince her parents but they have given me such arguments which make me sick. The girl cannot go against them because of the values taught by the same parents. My sister asks me to gradually detach myself, but it is not possible for me. I asked her mother if there is anything which can be done to convince you, I will do it blindly. I have reached a stage where I am open to any sort of help from anyone, whatever it may take.

  1. I felt like I was reading a frame out of my life. I too come from the same background and although I am constantly being pushed towards ‘right guys’ I haven’t had to lose anyone for societal reasons…..yet. I fear very soon I may be faced with such a decision myself. The sad thing is, even though the logical side of my brain tells me this is all bullshit, there’s this illogical side born from being raised in my conservative culture, that keeps getting in the way. And of course let’s not forget the emotional blackmail that comes from a family with the sole purpose of maintaining social dignity, even though I live nowhere near it, with no regard for pure and simple happiness. I sometimes question if they truly care. Perhaps their expression of care is warped beyond recognition by these societal rules.
On the flip side, I have seen numerous couples who have stuck to the ‘rules’, marries according to societal laws and are now in, for lack of a better word, a hollow marriage. It’s like doing a job that you need to do to survive. I cannot see myself in such a situation but I fear I might make stupid decision because of that ‘illogical’ side of my brain.
Thank you for a great post! All I can say is that a relationship is not one sided and if she isn’t willing to put a little bit of herself on the line for it, whatever the reason, then maybe it is not worth pursuing. Good luck for the future!

    1. I have felt every word of your comment here because, unlike my other posts, this is not fiction. When do you see a 23 year old saying that he is ready for marriage? Nobody understand it, all they see is some illogical thing. I do not blame anyone for it, all I can do is to change it in the upcoming generation. If I ever have a daughter, her happiness would be my sole priority and nothing else matters. My situation is too complicated and that is why I cannot explain it in words. Sometimes, this anguish asks me to begin advocating casual and time-pass relationships. But, I am too wise to listen to my anger. Everything happens for a reason.
P.S.: I typed a lot without realizing the length, blame it on my hatred of society 😉

        1. You sound like a savior, I have been looking for partners to blast this thing called society. Let us build a community for it. I have no plans of becoming a Devdas with overgrown beard. I am a rebel at heart.
P.S.: I just realized that I forgot to shave my beard :p

          1. Hahaha! Better shave fast or people will start thinking you are becoming Devdas! Lol! I’m actually on my way to a complete 180 from society. I’m planning marrying an American man 😛 Not looking forward to the reactions to my announcement though. But that’s what it’s going to be – an announcement not a plea for permission. I will be labelled an ungrateful badtameez etc. but I hope I can bear with these temporary discomforts for long term happiness 🙂

          2. I am too far from my home, away from the ‘what will anyone say’ feelings. I wish everyone gets a partner like you, the girl in my life needed at least 10% of your philosophy. If you ever need any support in your pursuit of America then I am ready to fight like a warrior. I have my weird ways of dealing with such issues. I do not sound like I have lost the most vital component of my life. If a relationship with an Indian girl happens to me again, I am referring her to you for some lessons on Badtameezi etc :p

  2. The way you’ve started the article with the letter is really interesting. The caste system in India and the way some ‘social animals’ stick to it is enough to raise abhorrence against this weird system. They do not judge a person by her/his character or deeds but by the caste..sad indeed…

    1. Born and raised up in India, I was always aware of the scenario. But, the experience of being on the receiving end has told me the severity of it. Thank you for stopping by and giving your time to this post 🙂
